3 reasons why you are losing sleep over your management team:
1) Most people become managers/supervisors by the method.
They work hard and do a great job in their own department or area of the company.
Then one day someone either quits, gets fired, gets a new job, gets transferred, or retires.
Then someone is elected to be the new manager of this group and then rarely gets any training on how to: Hire good people, keep good people, hold people accountable, communicate with their people, coach and mentor with their people, help their people grow and increase their productivity, and keep your people from leaving your organization once you have time, money and effort invested in them.
They then realize that their responsibility has shifted 180 degrees and don’t know how to manage and lead others.
2) Most Managers are ineffective at the core competencies of leadership
International surveys over the years show that the core competencies of highly effective managers are in the following areas:
Ability to motivate others
Chance management and how to hold others accountable
Coaching and mentoring of internal employees
Communication (listening and speaking to workers)
Customer service-internal and external
Negotiating-with employees, vendors and customers
Performance management of their people
Planning and goal setting of workers
Recruiting/hiring and retention of good employees
Stress management within their department
3) How much formal training do most managers/supervisors get in these key areas of management and leadership? Answer- is very little. Studies show that less than 10% of managers and supervisors receive any formal training in these ten areas.
