Adequate can be good enough

Do you know that feeling when doing your work and realizing that you are doing a lot of work and still have work to do at the end of the day? You are probably good at your work and focused to deliver quality work, when possible even going for excellent work. That additional quality drive probably consumes a lot of time. Think again about those moments you adjusted that work to do the final crossing the t's and dotting the i's, just to make it perfect. That additional work might very well have consumed a disproportionate amount of time, energy and focus. Did it really have to be excellent or was adequate good enough?

Our own drive for excellence is often keeping us away from doing more Great Work and we are stuck in too much good work. Remember, good work is the familiar, useful, productive work you do and do well. Great Work is the work that matters, inspires, stretches and provokes and our aim is to do less good work and more Great Work. So, next time when tasked to deliver something that is part of you daily job, consider on forehand when it would be adequate. Set that adequacy level as your target for the job to be done. Good chance you will safe some time, valuable time you can spend on the work that really matters!
