B9D, Inc: B9D stands for Beyond 9 Dots and refers to the puzzle from which the expression came: Thinking outside the Box.

She founded B9D in 1992 at first to provide marketing and sales consulting to the many new technology companies that were being formed. Many of them were started by brilliant engineers and inventors who either didn’t have the experience to build good marketing and sales teams for their new company or preferred to spend their time and effort on their technology and let B9D handle the marketing and sales.

Hazel has 4 web sites to inform and to answer questions you may have on any of these topics.
http://www.hazelwagner.com
http://www.brainstorming-that-works.com

Key talking points:

1. Why do we need to learn how to think better? Doesn’t thinking come automatically?

2. Is brainstorming something that business people need to learn? I would have thought everyone does it already.

3. How does all this apply to marketing and sales?

4. You talk about creating a brainstorming culture. What does that mean and how does an organization do it?

5. What are some directions you can give our listeners now before they even read your book?

Independent America: The Two Lane Search With Hanson Hosein

Tuesday, November 13, 2007 12:12pm

Filmmaker Hanson Hosein visits with David Wolf about the film, “Independent America: The Search for Mom and Pop”.

describe image

Hanson Hosein and Heather Hughes are award-winning digital filmmakers.
Their recent film Independent America: The Two-Lane Search for Mom & Pop was an early exercise in the use of digital technology in storytelling and ongoing interaction with its audience. It has been seen around the world, thanks to their innovative grassroots marketing campaign and blog.

Self-produced and self-financed, the award-winning documentary has also been featured by Yahoo!, USA Today, BusinessWeek, Variety, ABC News, National Public Radio, and has been broadcast by NHK Japan, SBS Australia and the Sundance Channel.

Hanson joined forces with partner, Heather Hughes for the film. The duo say they tried to make our 55-day trip without relying on interstate highways, corporate chain restaurants, motels or stores.

What they discovered, and experienced, was surprising. The expedition allowed them to capture an America at a historical and ideological crossroads, where even the health of its democracy hinges on the survival of independent business. And where many citizens are increasingly concerned that they have lost control over the nation’s large and powerful institutions. Which is why “local” matters more than ever.

Eric is a 4x entrepreneur who is really committed to providing meaningful advice to smallbiz owners. He and partner, Michael Lieberman, created “Reality Marketing” which departs the typical advertising agency approach in that solutions are quantifyable, customer centric, budget oriented and are results oriented in terms of high ROMI (return on marketing investment).

Here’s a company that is dedicated to helping small businesses with practical and tactical solutions. A refreshing down to earth, results oriented approach to marketing.

Eric has a few additional approaches that he describes here that really make this a worth while segment.

The Smallbiz Brain: David Houle

Saturday, October 27, 2007 8:59pm

David Houle is a futurist. He helps companies and entrepreneurs think in terms of what might be on the horizon and frame their planning accordingly.

describe image

David Houle looks at the world through his own unique prism. Visit his blog, Evolution Shift to get a peak around the corner to help put your business plans (or life plans for that matter) into the context of constant change.

In his book, The Shift Age [to be released January 2008] David explains that the information age is no longer. He’s says three forces are defining our evolution:, the flow to global, and the flow to the individual. He’s referring to the power that is now in the hands of the consumer. We are “free agents” and he says this is key to small business people.

Simply put, Houle says there are to opposing economic “units” emerging. This points to who we are becoming: The “well articulated and defined individual” who considers herself as a “global citizen”.

On the pragmatic side, David discusses what this all means as a business owner in the context of constant change. How do you plan? How do you design a brand? How do you determine your core business is, what your emotional relationship to your customer is?

David Houle is passionate observer of the world we live in, I love these themes and I think you will too.

The Smallbiz Brain: Laura Ries

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 7:28am

Laura Ries, branding guru talks about how NOT to grow your brand. Laura appears regularly on CNBC, Fox News, CNN and is a contributor to the Wall Street Journal, Advertising Age and others.

photo of Laura Ries

I’ve had Laura on the show a couple of times and she always delivers gems about branding in her passionate style! This is fascinating subject for anyone in business. She talks about the mistakes companies make when building a brand.

For example, always use PR to build a brand…not advertising. That’s because PR has much more credibility than advertising. Ads are the company talking about themselves—and everyone knows it. This equals very low credibility. PR on the other hand is a collective impression of a product or service and its brand-as it lives in the minds of customers at large. It’s truthful, and this equals very high credibility.

Enjoy the segment and I look forward to your feedback!

Daniel talks with me about why the left brain thinking is no longer dominating as it did in the Information Age, and why we now live in the Conceptual Age where right brain thinking will become increasingly more important to succeed.
