EFactor took its Social Media Marketing event to Boston on Tuesday, October 16, where local innovators and entrepreneurs gathered at Cambridge-based coworking space Intrepid Labs to dig into expert advice from industry experts about the ins and outs of digital marketing via social media platforms.
Presenter Shannon Jamieson came to the event from New Leaf Legal, and presented on the oft-overlooked legal side of social media marketing. She warned against the dangers of lifting third-party content from the web, hosting contests and sweepstakes without knowing your particular state’s laws regarding them and forsaking legal obligations in favor of aesthetic priorities. Jamieson also added that it’s a safe move to let users authorize you to access their info via plug-ins and apps that they’re used to, and of course, that disclaimers are your legal best friends -- “Disclaim the [heck] out of everything,” she joked.
Molly DeLong, the evening’s second presenter, hailed from Real Bullets Branding, a social media strategy company. Research, said Molly, is crucial, and should never be rushed, because according to her, there is no such thing as a Facebook- or Twitter-tailored strategy. Rather, she said that these elements grow from the overall business strategy that’s built into a company’s culture. Molly enlightened attendees about “the new consumer” -- people whose concerns have more to do with their opinion of a company’s values and mission, rather than whether or not their product or service will work. According to Molly, each consumer is his or her own audience and each business has its own set of social media outlets that are best for them.
Beantown-based small business owners will surely benefit from these sage soundbytes of ultra-necessary advice. Special thanks to Intrepid Labs for hosting the event and for sharing its innovative vibes with the crowd.
